Asheville Jazz Orchestra
November 16, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm EST$7.50 – $15
The Asheville Jazz Orchestra, generally regarded as western North Carolina’s premier big band, will make a special concert appearance at White Horse Black Mountain on Saturday, Nov. 16.
Dedicated to advancing and preserving the big band jazz tradition, the 17-piece Asheville Jazz Orchestra was founded in 2005. The band’s repertoire ranges from dance classics of the Swing Era through original charts by area composers. Through their work with the Asheville Jazz Council, the AJO has performed at many educational music festivals, including the City of the Arts Jazz Festival, Patton High School Jazz Festival and Western Carolina University Trumpet Festival.
Since its founding, the Asheville Jazz Orchestra has been directed by Dr. David Wilken. In addition to directing the AJO, Dr. Wilken also plays trombone and composes much of the orchestra’s material. He can also be heard playing traditional New Orleans jazz with the Low-Down Sires and conducting the Land of the Sky Symphonic Band.
