Bullock Does Bach

November 23, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm EST

$9 – $18

The John Denver tribute has been cancelled, we’re sorry to report. However, if you’ve already purchased tickets for the event, and would like to see “Bullock Does Bach” on the same night instead, you can use those tickets at the event!

$18 in advance, $20 at the door.

It’s not every folk musician who can pull off an evening of solo Bach, and fewer still who can do it alternating between two different instruments. But as Western North Carolina audiences have long known, Robin Bullock is not your average folk musician.

Hailed as a “Celtic guitar god” by Baltimore City Paper and “one of the best folk instrumentalists in the business” by Sing Out! magazine, Bullock will explore and interpret the solo work of Johann Sebastian Bach in a show entitled “Bullock Does Bach” at the White Horse Black Mountain on Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7:30 p.m.

In his “Bullock Plays Bach” concert, Robin performs Bach selections originally composed for cello, violin and lute, as well as organ chorales and choral works, all exquisitely transcribed by Bullock for guitar or mandolin. Drawing from his two Bach-centered CDs Bach: Suites for Mandolin, Volume One and Majesty and Magic: Music of Bach, Dowland and Carolan for Solo Guitar, as well as from further Bach recording projects in the planning stages, Robin gives these timeless works new voice while remaining true to their original spirit.

A review by Cash Box online magazine, described the show as “Beautiful…a breakthrough re-interpretation of these important works, conceived and executed at a level of sublime virtuosity.”

Among Bullock’s many honors are a ranking among DigitalDreamDoor.com’s “100 Greatest Acoustic Guitarists,” Editor’s Pick and Player’s Choice Awards from Acoustic Guitar Magazine, multiple Washington Area Music Association WAMMIE Awards for Traditional Folk Instrumentalist and Traditional Folk Recording of the Year, a Governor’s Award from the Maryland State Arts Council and the Swannanoa Gathering’s Master Music Maker Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Bullock, who originally rose to prominence as a founding member of the innovative acoustic world-music trio Helicon (winners of the Association for Independent Music’s prestigious INDIE Award for Best Seasonal Recording), has released 15 solo and collaborative recordings range from loving yet innovative interpretations of Celtic tradition, to the beloved carols and hymns of the Christmas season, to deep explorations of Bach’s incomparable masterpieces.

Bullock also appears on The Road Home, a tribute to his late friend and collaborator Butch Baldassari, alongside such greats as David Grisman, Ricky Skaggs, Sam Bush, Tim O’Brien and the Nashville Mandolin Ensemble. Robin maintains a busy international touring schedule, performing in a number of settings; though his primary focus is solo performance, he can also be heard in Celtic duos with Steve Baughman and Irish singer Aoife Clancy, as a member of the award-winning world-folk trio Helicon, as part of an Asheville-based John Denver tribute group, and most notably, as sideman with Grammy Award-winning folk icon Tom Paxton.

Robin’s many years of touring with Tom have included collaborations with such luminaries as John McCutcheon, Grammy-winning songwriters Jon Vezner and Don Henry, and on their 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2015 “Together at Last” tours, Tom’s fellow Grammy winner Janis Ian.

When he’s not on the road, Robin lives in Black Mountain, N.C.
