Joshua Messick — a National Hammered Dulcimer Champion who has been a featured instrumentalist for movies and a music festival headliner — plays Celtic, world, renaissance, folk and classical music with equal aplomb, and brings his expertise and some friends to White Horse Black Mountain for a weekend off holiday music. Other members of the group are Stephanie Messick (Celtic harp), James Kylen (percussion) and Ryan Knott (cello).

Joshua Messick, who’s based in Asheville, N.C., breathes new life into his ancient, enchanting instrument. Audiences are transported as he weaves cinematic stylings and endless imagination with virtuosic performances. A beautiful and captivating listening experience, Joshua is a composer and innovator who has released seven studio albums.

The National Hammered Dulcimer Champion was the featured instrumentalist on the Japanese animated film Mary and the Witch’s Flower by Studio Ponoc (the successor of Studio Ghibli), which was released in 155 countries and territories including the film premiere at TCL Chinese Theatre (commonly known as Grauman’s Theatre) in Hollywood, Calif.

He’s also been a headline artist at the 2017 and 2018 Walnut Valley Festivals in Winfield, Kansas. In addition, Joshua has made several appearances on WoodSongs Old Time Radio Hour, which airs on 537 radio stations from Australia to Dublin, Ireland, on American Forces Radio Network twice each weekend in 177 nations, every military base and U.S. Naval ship in the world, and coast-to-coast in millions of TV homes as a public TV series.

“I thought I had seen everything,” said BJ Leiderman, well-known theme music composer for National Pubic Radio. “Then, I came upon Joshua Messick bringing a gorgeous hammered dulcimer to life. His ability to pull both gentle beauty and edgy power out of this instrument is astounding. And his ear is impeccable. I had no idea that a hammered dulcimer player could be a rock star.”
