Local Live with Jay Brown: Aaron Davis and The Greenblues
November 18, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm EST$10
White Horse is “a true listening room where the focus is on celebrating the connection between artist and audience.” Local Live featuring Wyoming songwriter Aaron Davis (of Screen Door Porch and Aaron Davis & The Mystery Machine, the Greenblues) and host Jay Brown.
Chiefly known as co-founder of national touring act Screen Door Porch, multi-instrumentalist and vocalist Aaron Davis works the lesser-worn corners of the American musical fabric through an unconventional lens. Slide banjo? A detuned guitar made of metal and a percussive cigar box? You bet. From “searing slide guitar” (Country Weekly) in the vintage blues vein à la Duane Allman with “a particularly interesting approach that mixes poetry, groove and roughness” (Lonestar Time) to a patchwork of fingerstyle folk and roots, alt-country, gypsy grass and early 70s rock, Davis has been described as a “truly phenomenal songwriter” (Americana UK). Wyoming-based and Kentucky-bred, Davis’ ninth album and second release under his name, The Meander (2019), features over a dozen musical guests from the greater Wyoming musician community and Wyoming Public Radio/NPR is calling it “a strong contender for Album of the Year.” Davis’ songs have landed in various projects including films, commercial, podcasts and network television.
According to Vanguard Records executive and critic Bill Bentley, “Screen Door Porch transformed roots music into something much larger, a down home good time vibe that induces sonic hypnosis.” The New York Times noted the Davis’ “entrepreneurial gumption in touring the Wyoming way,” regarding co-producing and performing with the WYOmericana Caravan Tour, “a traveling concert circus” that that made waves across the Mountain West. The aforementioned projects have allowed Davis to share bills with some outstanding acts—Wilco, Willie Nelson, Jason Isbell, Buddy Guy, Sam Bush, Brian Wilson, Steve Earle, Hayes Carll, Nicki Bluhm, Justin Townes Earle, Grace Potter, and James McMurtry.
The Greenblues are Ashely Roe (vocals and percussion) and Mike Gilmore (guitars, bouzouki and hand drums.
The duet’s spectrum includes blues, ballads, mantras, chants and more. Their music brings a message of world thought, and is often seasoned with eastern and African musical stylings. Many traditions are blended into a unique eclectic style, creating a very original kaleidoscope of sound, while maintaining the intimacy of a duet.
When not performing with Lazybirds, Shantavaani, or Swing Guitars, Jay Brown still finds some time to play with his other band, The Jay Brown One-Man-Band. Formed in 2007, The Jay Brown One-Man-Band includes Jay Brown on vocals, guitar, harmonica, and percussion. In 2010 the band added a new member, Jay Brown, on piano.
An American roots musician, Jay has hundreds of classic songs in his repertoire, as well as another hundred or so originals. Jay can often be found playing in pubs around Asheville, but he has also studied and performed music across the far reaches of the world, including New Orleans, California, India, Ghana, Peru, and Swannanoa.
