Roberta Baum “Winter Jazz Spells”

December 5, 2019 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm EST

Jazz singer and composer Roberta Baum, who was mentored by Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award winner Ornette Coleman during her formative years in New York and has recently earned critical acclaim from such publications as Downbeat and Musician magazines, will present her “Jazz Spells” concert at White Horse Black Mountain on Wed, Dec 5th at 7:30 p.m. Doors open at 7pm.

Performing with Bill Bares, Zack Page, and Will Younts, Roberta Baum presents a sumptuous feast of classic jazz standards illuminating the genius of our great American composers, including songs by George Gershwin, Rogers and Hammerstein, Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer, Oscar Peterson and more. Roberta Baum’s bohemian rapture is rooted in the legacy of jazz nobility, as in Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Betty Carter and Abbey Lincoln. In addition, she brings a stunning free jazz arsenal from her days with Ornette Coleman. Roberta Baum’s interpretations of jazz standards encompass a full spectrum of musical possibilities, gravitating from lush to feral, sensual to sublime.

Born in Brooklyn N.Y., Baum has performed on Broadway in Godspell as well as national tours of the Who’s rock opera Tommy and the rock musical Hair.

Swept away by the vocal improvisations of legendary jazz singer Betty Carter, Roberta changed direction from musical theater to singing jazz., fronting bands of her own with many of New York’s most esteemed jazz musicians, including Fred Hersch, Kenny Barron and Anthony Davis.

In 1979, Roberta was discovered and taken under wing by jazz giant Ornette Coleman, who produced and arranged her original music including Baum’s concert debut at the N.Y. Public Theater’s New Music Series in 1980.

Under the name of ”Serpentine,” Roberta went on to produce and record six CD’s celebrating feminine archetypes. Her 1995 Rock the Goddess CD garnered a commission to compose the soundtrack for Lifetime’s Intimate Portraits “Witches” narrated by Anjelica Huston.

Baum is a grant recipient from the National Endowment of the Arts and Meet the Composer for composition/performance with choreographer/dancer James Reedy (Erick Hawkins Dance Company).

“We are treated to some extraordinary vocal work by vocalist Roberta Baum; her tonal qualities along with her ability to sing micro tones can send chills up your spine,“ once wrote online magazine, CMJ New Music Report.

“There is an underground of female jazz singers in New York: strong, often inspiring vocalists who float just beneath the surface of public recognition in the Stygian netherworld of lofts, clubs and cabarets. On the few occasions when they rise into view, listeners are treated to a deeply personal view of the human voice. Women like Shelia Jordan and Abbey Lincoln. Add to that list Brooklyn born Roberta Baum,” penned Chip Stern of Musician Magazine.
